Altar Servers

Thinking of becoming an altar server (or reader) at mass?
By Colleen Nizza:
Masses are brought to life when you are a part of it! If your life is anything like mine, there’s sports practices, instrument practices, scouts, schoolwork and so many things that keep us busy day in and day out. But where is that time for us to gather as a family to just sit and spend time listening and praying? That time almost always falls to the bottom of our to-do list. It is important to find and make that time. It is a time that needs to be moved to the top of our to-do list. It’s one thing to read and hear about something. It’s an entirely other thing to participate in or utilize something. Serving our parish allows so many hands-on experiences, not only for us as adults, but for our children as well. Altar serving has many benefits. It allows children to become involved in the mass. It allows your child to have a better understanding and appreciation for what is going on during the mass. I’d say those are pretty wonderful benefits, wouldn’t you? Becoming a reader or lector is another critical ministry. When you read in mass, you are performing in a ministry that is absolutely essential to the celebration of the Eucharist. In addition, serving at church is a wonderful opportunity to get to know other parishioners, establishing friendships and allowing yourself to be better vested in your faith. Serving at St. John the Evangelist is a not only a way to help our community but a great way of making friends you’ll most likely have for a lifetime.
